Artists's Statement:

"I cannot remember a time in my life when I did not draw. My work as a realist has evolved over time. I create a scene as realistically as possible, yet an aesthetic emotion seems to escape from my artistic sense...thus emerges a degree of visionary or luminist quality in my paintings. Mastering drawing skills from life, especially the human form, is the best foundation for pursuing an honest realistic painting style.

I've been influenced and inspired by my surroundings, both urban and rural, and by the works of the nineteenth century European realists. Additionally, I've always liked rendering architectural landscapes, old buildings, bridges, and street scenes (most likely due to my early years growing up in New York City). I have been inspired to paint with a contrast of strong light, deep shadows, and their interplay on old buildings, cliff faces, and the human form.

Most of my paintings begin with a detailed carbon pencil drawing from an established composition. This is usually followed by a monotone grisaille underpainting in a thinned-down sepia wash. Then, thicker passages of paint mixed with medium are applied working from transparent shadow areas with color glazes to more opaque lighter areas. I paint using the traditional techniques of the old masters."
